How to Prep for a Window Installation

How to Prepare for Window Installation Day

The day you have been eagerly waiting for is almost upon you! So use this handy checklist that will help you prepare your home for the smoothest window installation possible.

Contact Your Contractor a Few Days Before Installation Day

No matter how prepared you think you are, there will always be something that you have overlooked. Reach out to your contractor ahead of the appointed installation day and make sure that everyone is on the same page to prevent any misunderstandings or unnecessary stress. Here are a few items you should remember to go over:

  • Confirm whether they will be installing windows from the outside, inside, or both, so you can prepare appropriately.

  • Ask how long they expect the window installation to take and whether it will be a multi-day process.

  • Finally, it doesn’t hurt to double-check that you both have the same installation date marked on your calendars.

Remove Curtains, Blinds, and Alarms

These are typically three of the biggest delays when installing windows. Blinds can take several hours to remove, and window alarms also have to be removed before any windows can be installed. Sometimes, it is better to call your security company to come out and help to disconnect alarms.

Clear Space Around Windows

Although it can differ by project, you should always allot approximately 5 feet of clear space around the windows. Carve this time out ahead of the installation day to move any furniture that is in the way, particularly if you have a piano or any antiques that need more care when moving.

Cover Furnishings

Installing new windows will typically create a great deal of dust. Taking a few proactive steps will make your cleanup job easier. Cover couches, beds, and other furnishings with either a drop cloth or an old sheet, and remember to remove pictures from the walls.
